Quotes from the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund
In 1977, the Hyde Amendment eliminated Medicaid funding to pay for the costs of an abortion; Pro-Choice Resources responded by creating the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund (HAAF) to assist low-income women with the costs of abortion. Below are a few stories in verbatim from HAAF recipients. Please note: names have been excluded to protect privacy.

"I was 29 with a 11 year old and a 2 year old, I was in a very bad abusive relationship with a man and I got pregnant, I knew from the start that I couldn't keep the baby, I knew that I would be stuck and have to take the abuse forever, and even worse I knew that my children would have to endure the abuse if I stayed. I had nowhere to go, no money and no one to talk to. I called the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund number and for the first time in 2 months I felt I could breathe again, the lady that I talked to seemed so caring and understanding. They don't just give you money they help you emotionally and when you go through something like that it means more than all the money in the world. I could never thank them enough. And just so you know I got rid of the boyfriend, and me and my 2 kids have never been better. Thank you so much."

"I would like to thank you so much for donating me money to go along with my abortion. This was not easy for me at all. But when I began contacting your funding program, it made me feel so relieved to find women that cared and who were helpful. Without your funding program, this would be a difficult thing for me to handle. It has been a wonderful experience to come in contact with you and the staff. Once again, thank you!"

Quotes from Emerge, our after-abortion support group
Emerge is a discussion and support group for women who have had an abortion. Women who participate in the group meet weekly to share and discuss their individual experiences in a safe, respectful and supportive environment with other women. Below are a comments (in verbatim) from previous Emerge participants.

"This group has truly changed my life! This experience has helped me to realize I am not alone and that I can begin to heal. I have met so many wonderful women that will remain my support network for long after the group ends. I am so thankful for this group!"

"I came to Emerge scared and confused. However, when I got there, I was greeted with smiles and understanding. I was able to voice my feelings and share my thoughts with nonjudgmental women that sincerely understood what I was feeling. They all accepted me completely and we built a great friendship. Although the group may be different, I would definitely recommend Emerge to any woman in need of post-abortion support. It is wonderful and nonjudgmental. I loved Emerge."

Quotes from the Birds & Bees Project, our sex education program
PCR's multi-faceted education and outreach program, the Birds and Bees Project educates youth and other at-risk groups in the Twin-Cities about contraceptives, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy and reproductive options, including parenting, adoption and abortion.

"This information (STI/HIV) should be presented to everyone. A lot of people don’t know who to ask.”

“I learned so much at P6 (a program of the Birds & Bees Project)! Everyone I know should have a place to get good information about sex and being healthy. My friends don't know where to go, and now I feel like I can tell them where to get the RIGHT information.”

"The teacher from the Birds & Bees Project taught me so much. She kept it interesting and now I understand how my body works and what things I should do to treat it good."
