Statistics from the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund
In 1977, the Hyde Amendment eliminated Medicaid funding to pay for the costs of an abortion; Pro-Choice Resources responded by creating the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund (HAAF) to assist low-income women with the costs of abortion.
507 women and girls used $88,000 in loans and grants from the Hersey Fund
87.5% of the women we assist live below the federal income poverty guidelines.
The Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund is one of the oldest and largest funds in the nation.
Statistics from Emerge, our after-abortion support group
Emerge is a discussion and support group for women who have had an abortion. Women who participate in the group meet weekly to share and discuss their individual experiences in a safe, respectful and supportive environment with other women. PCR held three, six-week, sessions serving an additional 13 women. All participates stated in their exit surveys that they feel their support network has been strengthened; they are better able to deal with the concerns that brought them to the group and are better able to express their feelings.
A former Emerge participant is now a group co-facilitator.
Statistics from the Birds & Bees Project, our sex education program
PCR's multi-faceted education and outreach program, the Birds and Bees Project educates youth and other at-risk groups in the Twin-Cities about contraceptives, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy and reproductive options, including parenting, adoption and abortion. The Birds & Bees Project partnered with members of the Minneapolis Public Schools, the Mayor’s office and other non-profit organizations in an effort to implement comprehensive sexuality education in the Minneapolis Public Middle Schools by 2010. The Birds & Bees Project is PCR’s largest program and provides reproductive and sexual health information to approximately 9,000 students, youth and women each year.
In an effort to expand sexual health education to be inclusive of gender diversity and to accurately teach gender identity and expression, PCR's Birds & Bees Project started collaborative training with Trans Youth Support Network, Annex Teen Clinic, Out4Good and Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention & Parenting.
